Support From Your Nicotine Replacement Therapy
Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRTs) are an important part of your quit journey because they can help mitigate cravings and keep you on track.
When working towards quitting cigarettes, all options must be considered. Support from your family, friends, and co-workers can provide relief, but, sometimes, the physical nicotine withdrawals can be, at best, distracting, at worst, debilitating.
Nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) can help reduce withdrawal feelings by giving you a small controlled dose of nicotine. Research shows that NRTs are not only safe, but can be one of the most effective tools for smoking cessation.
But not all NRTs are created equal. Depending on your current smoking levels, doctors may recommend a selection of nicotine delivery systems and dosages. Many of these can be purchased over-the-counter at your local pharmacy such as a patch, gum, or lozenge, but other NRTs including inhalers and nasal sprays must be prescribed.
NRT products can be used alone or in concert. Some strategies include using a long-acting NRT like a patch in combination with a short-acting NRT like a lozenge. And don’t be too concerned about the extra costs; people eligible for Medicare or Medicaid may also be eligible for free NRT. Recently, many private insurance plans have also expanded coverage for NRT, and many states in the United States even offer free NRT through state quitlines.
While several NRT are available over-the-counter, it is recommended you consult your doctor or trusted medical professional before adopting a NRT cessation program. This Monday, take stock of your options.
