How Sleep Deprivation Could Be Impacting Your Health
Do you want to wake up feeling clear-headed, energized, and refreshed? It’s not as hard as you think. Because you may be overlooking one of the most important pieces of your wellness routine.
We’re talking about sleep, and whether you’re getting enough of it. Most Americans fall short when it comes to getting the recommended amount of nightly shuteye. But how much sleep do you need? Adults ages 18-60 should get seven or more hours per night. However, according to data from the CDC, Americans, over 30% of adults and two-thirds of teenagers fail to get enough sleep, so it’s no surprise close to half of all Americans say they feel sleepy during the day between three and seven days per week.
And this is a big problem, because sleep deprivation can have some pretty nasty side effects. Symptoms typically include feeling tired, foggy, and forgetful, but not getting enough sleep can also worsen existing health issues such as chronic pain, high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression. To combat this, many adults are turning to over-the-counter remedies instead of time-tested strategies to improve sleep. A recent JAMA study found Americans were taking more than twice the amount of melatonin by 2018 compared to a decade earlier.
So how can you make sure you’re getting enough sleep?
