NYC Mayor’s Office Hosts Monday Mile Promoting Inclusive Physical Activity
The New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and NYC Parks created a Move it Monday activity, organizing a Monday Mile kickoff event promoting inclusive physical activity.
Physical activity is key when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle for both individuals with and without disabilities.
On August 19, 2019, The New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and Move it Monday, a concept of The Monday Campaigns, held a Monday Mile kickoff event at Thomas Jefferson Park and Recreational Center in Manhattan to promote inclusive physical activity and inspire organizations to start their own Monday Mile programs. Participants walked, jogged, and rolled around the track and learned about the benefits of using Monday as a weekly cue to recommit to healthy behaviors.
The event featured a number of participants from a diverse collection of groups and organizations such as NYC Department of Parks and Recreations, New York University’s Initiative for Women with Disabilities, The Lighthouse Guild, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Adaptive Climbing. The keynote speaker, Victor Calise, Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, highlighted how healthy activities can include persons of all abilities.
An active and healthy lifestyle is important for everyone, including people with disabilities. In New York City, we work to ensure that the disability community has equal access to our facilities and that our programming is as inclusive as possible. MOPD is proud to partner with Move It Monday to bring the Monday Mile to New York City to provide yet another opportunity for inclusive fitness for all.

For the city, this was an opportunity to promote adaptive programming and learn about the different recreational resources available to our disabled community. At the event’s resource fair, Monday Mile tool-kits, signage, flyers, and posters were provided to encourage participating organizations to holding their own weekly Monday Mile with their constituents.
